Units of Competency Standards

The NZRAB Continuing Professional Development (CPD) program uses the National Competency Standards in Architecture as the benchmark for assessing all CPD activities. The allocation of Units to Contexts is the critical element in this decision. The four Units of Competency are:

  • Design
  • Documentation
  • Project Management
  • Practice Management.

In addition to these four competencies, a fifth category of Core Professional Development is also available to Registered Architects.

Design

1.1

To create a design that is capable of realisation, through the exercise of knowledge, imagination, judgement and professional responsibility

1.2

To formulate an initial response to a project brief sufficient to obtain endorsement, of overall objectives and concept, by a client and other interested parties

1.3

To develop a design proposal from an initial concept

1.4

To resolve a schematic design sufficient to obtain agreement and authorisation to proceed to documentation for its translation into built form

1.5

To continuously comply with the brief and meet contractual agreements throughout the course of implementation of a design project

Documentation

2.1

To communicate information, throughout the course of determining a brief and throughout the conceptual design, design development documentation and construction phases of the engagement

2.2

To generate documentation of a building project so that it can be costed, built and completed in accordance with the brief, timeframe, cost and quality objectives

2.3

Before, or at the completion of building project, to provide for effective occupancy and as research input for future operational use

Project Management

3.1

To confirm objective and conditions at inception of project

3.2

To establish an appropriate procurement method and complete contractual arrangements with all participants

3.3

To provide contract administration for construction of a project

3.4

Before, or at the completion of the project, to document responsibilities and assemble information for future operational use

Practice Management

4.1

To establish and maintain an architectural practice

Core Professional Development

5.1

Ethics and professional conduct

5.2

Legislative changes effecting the built environment and commercial practice (inclusive of referenced documents)

5.3

Fundamental professional issues concerning all architects, including such areas as insurance, sustainability and other areas as identified from time to time

5.4

One-off topics e.g. Christchurch earthquake learnings
